This training will give the tools to create good records in Millennium. You will learn how to search efficiently for the best record to link to and how to create a new record from scratch. We will do our bet to demonstrate why we do things the way we do and why you should too.

Orientation for New Member Library Staff, held in the MHLS Auditorium.
Target Audience: This program is designed for new library staff, but open to all who would like to attend.
Learning Objectives: The workshop provides introductory, baseline information about working effectively in a public library and in the Mid-Hudson Library System.
The workshop will cover:
· The role of the public library in our communities
· How your library fits into the library structure of New York State
· Your role as a library representative
· Helping patrons find what they want
· Overview of the online catalog, HomeACCESS databases and interlibrary loan
· System-wide resource sharing concepts and issues

Target Audience: Especially for new board members, but open to all. Library board members looking for essential, baseline information to increase their effectiveness in serving on a library board will benefit from attending this session.
Learning Objectives: Attendees will learn
effective ways to carry out the nine essential library trustee duties and responsibilities (everything the library board does either falls within one of these duties or is done in support of them).
Trustees are able to earn $200 for their libraries, through the 2010 MHLS Incentive Program Trustee Reimbursement, if every member of their board has attended MHLS Trustee Essential education within 2006-10, with at least one attendance occurring in 2010.
Facilitated by Rebekkah Smith Aldrich – MHLS Coordinator for Library Growth & Sustainability and Merribeth Advocate – MHLS Outreach & Education Coordinator.

The tour will cover:
· An introduction to the MHLS organization, web site and electronic resources (the public library catalog and HomeACCESS)
· Administration: Business Office, Shipping & Delivery
· Public Services: Outreach & Continuing Education, ILL, Youth Services & Community Connections, Library Growth & Sustainability Department
· Technology: Automated Services – including AV Services, Data Entry and Computer Operations
There is built-in time to talk one-on-one with department staff
